A trend that has gained space in Brazil and in the world in recent years, food halls are spaces that bring together different restaurants and chefs, artisanal concepts or authorial cuisine and provide a gastronomic experience, environments that make it possible to meet and celebrate with family and friends. With the advance in vaccination against Covid-19 and the relaxation of health standards to prevent and combat the coronavirus, the moment is for the resumption of events, social activities, reunion, which boosted the growth of these gastronomic markets, which have multiplied cross country.
Different and far from the food courts of shopping malls and supermarkets, food halls attract the advantages of bringing together, in the same place, different cuisines and gourmet options, which please the most diverse palates. In addition, they require a privileged location in the city. Spacious commercial spots, which in the past may have been factories, large stores or warehouses, match the concept.
Anyone who was curious or wants to know where to enjoy one of these spaces in Florianópolis has, since January of this year, found a good option at Armazém Ria Maria, a multipurpose complex that brings together 20 operations, with a strong focus on gastronomy, but also aimed at areas such as entertainment. , crafts, decoration, architecture, art and culture.
125 years ago, the cargo sheds of ENNH (Empresa Nacional de Navigation Hoepcke), founded by Carl Hoepcke, operated on the site, which were later transformed into a metallurgical plant, a nail factory and, later, an ice factory. The structure has been completely restored and revitalized.
trends in behavior
Luisa Grillo, interior architect at Armazém, highlights the recent appreciation of food halls. “It’s a new look at the old food courts. I see many behavioral trends linked to this, whether due to the desire for greater security, or the desire to gather the whole family in one place, having leisure and gastronomy options that please all tastes, or also for the simple fact that people like to be together, to be seen, of this meeting. This type of venue provides all of that,” she explains.

From bar food to cuisines such as Italian, Japanese, Argentinian and French, the space also brings together breweries, artisanal ice cream, coffee shops, among other establishments, and is ideal for both a quick meal, a happy hour, and relaxed and elegant dinners.
Newly arrived in Florianópolis, Laura Martins Soares, 43, who moved last February from Curitiba, Paraná, to the capital of Santa Catarina, says that Armazém has become one of her favorite places in the city. “I met Floripa through a friend, who has lived here for many years. I came to visit her and finish some preparations for the move, and she asked me to meet at the place, to catch up and celebrate my arrival. Since then we have always been there. It’s very good, because I really like decorating, especially now, when I’m fixing up the new house. So, it’s perfect, I go early, I stop by the stores, then we have dinner and each one eats what they like best,” she explains.

From breakfast to dinner
Patrícia Grillo, owner of Hoepcke Empreendimentos, emphasizes that the idea is to provide a unique experience to the visitor, who finds options in all these areas in the space. In addition, she points out, people are able to connect to the affective memory of the city. “Whoever visits Armazém will find many options, for the most different tastes. Everything has been created so that people can stay in the place from breakfast to dinner. The idea is to offer, above all, a collective entertainment space, where people feel comfortable and happy”, she says.
She says that the inspiration for the complex was Chelsea Market, in New York. “When I got to know the space, I knew what business model I would like to implement here in Florianópolis: a gastronomic mix, with a cosmopolitan, contemporary and, above all, democratic footprint. This is allied to the style of stores that sell household items, fashion, beverages and floriculture, and in our case, here in Florianópolis, there is also a space for an art gallery, on the mezzanine. There in the United States there was also an old Nabisco factory until 1922, which in 1997 was transformed into the first gastronomic market in New York”, she says.
Space for the exchange of experiences
Those who prefer to enjoy leisure time with family and friends in the open air can also enjoy the outdoor square Annita Hoepcke da Silva and the Biergarten at Armazém Rita Maria, a relaxed atmosphere aimed at exchanging experiences, coexistence, integrated with gastronomy and ready to welcome lovers of craft beers, a major attraction of the capital of Santa Catarina.

In addition to the literal translation from German as Jardim das Cervejas, the term Biergarten has more meanings, which refer to the concept of enjoying the moments provided by a good beer.
Germany’s Biergärten are common areas, where there are large tables, used for Stammtischs (like our happy hours, meetings with friends), lunches, conversations, picnics. These spaces are like squares – places to hang out, meet friends and meet new people. They are very common in Germanic territory and are part of the list of tourist places to visit in the main cities.
