See which cities in Ceará did not vaccinate even half of the children with the 1st dose of the vaccine against Covid – Ceará

AN childhood vaccination (5 to 11 years old) against Covid-19, in Ceará, started on January 15 this year. After 81 days, the State is advancing, for the most part, uniformly in this process. However, some cities emerge as an exception.

While 172 of the 184 municipalities have already exceeded the rate of 80% of the first dose (D1) applied to this public, 9 cities have not reached not half of the target audience.

This level is well below the state average. According to data from Vacinómetro, the official platform of the State Department of Health (Sesa), the average percentage of application of the immunizer in children is 67.93%.

Pediatrician Vanuza Chagas explains that “the low vaccination coverage leaves in risk the population” and makes it difficult to obtain the so-called herd immunity. The specialist warns that, for whatever the disease, the absence of vaccine can increase “deaths and definitive sequels”.

“Safety margin”

The Council of Municipal Health Secretaries of Ceará (Cosems) assesses that, in general, the State has “a percentage of vaccinated that places us in a safety margin in the disease control“.

Regarding the low rates in the cities above, the agency says “guide and contribute with the municipalities in the sense of launching different strategies to reach and raise awareness of the population, according to the reality of each one”.

Vaccination works as a collective immunization strategy, that’s why we always value progress in an equitable way and in this sense, through the effort and commitment of all managers and their teams, we have a general percentage of vaccinated that puts us in a safety margin in the control of illness.

As a strategy to advance in this immunization process, Cosems also informed that it holds periodic meetings with Sesa and the Public Ministry and, when municipalities with a low percentage of vaccination coverage“actions are proposed to improve this coverage, taking into account the justifications presented by the municipalities”.

Among the municipal actions that have been carried out, the agency mentions “night service, intersectoral movements with actions in schools and day care centers, itinerant vaccination to decentralize service points”, among others.

Resistance hinders evolution

Four of the nine cities with the lowest rate of application justified that progress in the immunization process has come up against the “resistance from many parents“.

Morrinhos’ press office went further. According to a note sent to Diário do Nordeste, “resistance has been not only from the child population, but also from other age groups”.

Specifically regarding the children’s public, the advisory highlighted that, as “it requires parental authorization, this harming this advance in relation to adolescents who attend the vaccination center”.

We have a lot of resistance from parents and guardians, considering that we are not authorized to vaccinate without the permission of parents or guardians, we are limited in continuing the immunization of children.

Morrinhos communication consultancy

To overcome this “resistance”, the Municipality claims to be using strategies such as “survey [das crianças aptas a serem cadastradas] together with schools, fixed vaccination days at Basic Health Units and vaccination on weekends, vaccination in more distant locations.” Today, Morrinhos has the second worst rate in the state, behind only Paraipaba.

The city of Paraipaba reported that there is “a great rejection on the part of the children’s parents”, but that it is guiding the population “through social networks, holding events aimed at pediatric vaccination with recreation activities for children’s entertainment and promoting campaigns vaccination in day care centers and schools (public and private) throughout the city”.

In Caucaia, in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza (RMF), the Municipal Health Department also identified “low demand and adherence by parents and guardians in relation to the registration of children in the Digital Health“.

To increase the rates, the Department has developed several strategic axes, among them, to sensitize the population through the main communication channels, intersectoral partnerships with other Departments, such as Education, which carries out an itinerant vaccination action in public schools in the municipality, in addition to the two fixed points installed in the city.

Department of Health of Caucaia

By highlighting the importance of immunization, the Ministry stressed that “parents must be attentive and watch over their children’s health, as the vaccine is one of the most effective measures in prevention of diseases infectious diseases.” The goal is for more than 36,000 children to be vaccinated in Caucaia. So far, almost 16,800 children have received the immunizer.

Pediatrician Vanuza Chagas emphasizes that “it is necessary to regain confidence in vaccination. The work in schools is very important. Health agents can also contribute a lot in this process, providing information and giving confidence”.

In this pandemic we saw that fakenews make people insecure, afraid of the vaccine. These fake news generate large proportions and cause problems [no processo de imunização].

Divergent data

The Pacajus Health Department said it was investigating the numbers to identify whether the target set for children by Sesa “is overratedit could be greater than reality.” According to the Municipality, 78% of children aged 5 to 11 who are registered were vaccinated. However, the Health Department did not inform the total universe of this public.

The municipality continues to intensify vaccination, guaranteeing active search actions in schools, requesting the vaccination card when enrolling students; expanding the dissemination and, above all, making the population aware of the importance of completing the vaccination cycle.
