Wrinkles may be the most obvious sign of facial aging, but it’s not the only one. According to experts, skin maturation can be identified in equally (or even more) expressive ways.
“Many patients attribute their aging faces to some expression line. However, in certain cases, other changes have a considerably greater impact. Therefore, medical help is essential”, says dermatologist Abdo Salomão Jr., a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD).
Along with other experts, the professional listed six little-known but very uncomfortable signs of facial aging.
With aging, it is common to also lose the fat compartments of the skin, which affects facial volume. “The loss of fat on the face also leads to the appearance of more wrinkles, as the skin is not able to retract when it loses what is underneath it, and the older a person is, the worse their ability to recover. Wrinkles can appear or become even more pronounced if they already existed”, argues plastic surgeon Mário Farinazzo, a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP).
In these cases, fillers are ideal for reversing the condition. “In the case of deeper demarcations, when there are many, surgery for wrinkles [também chamada de ritidoplastia] can bring better results”, adds the surgeon.
The eye area, having a thinner skin, can easily give away people’s age. The main change that appears in this region and ages the skin, even before the formation of wrinkles, is dark circles. “Dark circles can be caused by a number of reasons, including structural, vascular and pigmentary factors. However, the most common is that the change is caused by the sum of more than one factor, which is called mixed dark circles”, says dermatologist Paola Pomerantzeff.
The treatment of these changes, therefore, will depend on the cause of the dark circles, and may include hyaluronic acid fillers, pulsed light and peelings.
There is no doubt that, in addition to wrinkles, blemishes are also capable of aging the skin. “They can appear even in younger patients, due to sun exposure without adequate protection”, says Abdo.
To treat them, the Pico Ultra 300 laser represents a breakthrough in lasers. Ultra-fast, it works with picosecond pulses.
Acne scars, which can appear even after proper treatment of pimples, can drastically change the texture of the skin, giving the face a rough and aged appearance. “This happens because the glands that give rise to pimples are in the deep dermis, as well as collagen and elastin fibers. Therefore, there is a risk of acne compromising these fibers and, consequently, the architecture of the skin, generating deep scars that give an irregular texture to the skin tissue”, explains Abdo.
The change can be fought through the use of technologies such as Electroderm, which stimulates and reorganizes the skin’s collagen by joining radiofrequency to robotic microneedling.
Vases on the face
A large portion of the population suffers from a complicated problem in the facial region, since it gives a sensation of aging and is difficult to camouflage with makeup: the spider veins on the face, scientifically called telangiectasia. “The color of the veins and their caliber are usually thin, making it difficult to achieve good coverage with makeup”, explains vascular surgeon Aline Lamaita, a member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (Sbacv).
In addition to genetic predisposition, bad habits such as excessive exposure to the sun and even the excessive use of chemical peels can trigger the problem. To treat it, it is recommended to surrender to the Nd Yag 1064 laser or pulsed light devices.
drooping nasal tip
When the nasal tip droops with age, it can give the face an even more aged look – and a rhinoplasty can help. “Nose surgery can also have an anti-aging effect, according to a study published early last year in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. This is a procedure that most people don’t consider as a tool for rejuvenation, but this research has shown that rhinoplasty, or plastic nose surgery, can make a woman look up to three years younger,” says plastic surgeon Paolo Rubez. .
The study, led by researchers at the University of California, used a type of artificial intelligence known as machine learning. “Until now, there was little or no objective scientific evidence for the rejuvenating effect of rhinoplasty. This technology has arrived to change the scenario, recognizing patterns and characteristics of aging beyond what the human eye can perceive”, adds the specialist.
Rhinoplasty involves structural changes to bone and cartilage through small incisions in the nose and, where necessary, around the nostril, while the patient is under general anesthesia.
