meoctober n 2017 I was introduced to non-sports motoring information, what is known as product information, in a presentation of Skoda. The Czech brand invited me (as a representative of the magazine ENGINE BRANDalready disappeared) to the dynamic presentation of Karoqthe second model in its SUV range after the Kodiaq. For two days I had the opportunity to test the Czech SUV on the roads of Sicilyin southern Italy.
Skoda Karoq 2022 test
More than four years later I have been invited by Skoda again, this time on behalf of BRAND CARS (the portal of Engine of BRAND), to attend the dynamic presentation of the new skoda karoqwhich has been updated with essential changes to take a run and give a new impulse to the model before giving way to the second generation (if any). It is what is known as a ‘face wash’ OR ‘remodeling’ (redesign in Spanish). The setting chosen this time is the Portuguese city of Viana do Castelo75 kilometers north of Port and very close to the border with Galicia.
agile and dynamic for an SUV
In these almost five years since my motor ‘christening’ I have tried dozens of different models and I have learned a little more about cars (not much), but my opinion about the Skoda Karoq remains the same: it is a good SUV, agile and dynamic for an SUV, easy to drive, really comfortable, very spacious inside, quite practical for day to day and with the right dose of character and emotion. Now, in addition, it has a more striking appearance, a more elaborate aerodynamics, better equipment and a more modern and ecological interior.
most striking appearance
The first thing that catches the eye of the new Skoda Karoq is the front grille, now wider and more hexagonal, as well as the front and rear lights with LED technologymore stylized and sharper than in its previous version. The daytime running lights are now split in two and for the first time the Karoq can be optionally equipped with Matrix full-LED headlightsone of the main novelties of the model.
Another of the most important novelties is that aerodynamics have been improved by more than 9%which implies that now the SUV has a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.30 and that has allowed reduce consumption and CO2 emissions equal engine. This improvement has been possible, among other aspects, thanks to the new aerodynamically optimized alloy wheels (from 17 to 19 inches), the longer rear spoiler, the side wings on the rear window and the covered underbody.
Recycled and sustainable materials
As for the interior, the novelties are mainly two: new recycled and sustainable materials (for example, seat covers are partially made from recycled PET bottles) and advanced technologies to increase comfortlike enhanced LED ambient lighting and the option of power adjustment and memory function for the front passenger seat.
Two diesel engines and three gasoline
Regarding the mechanical range, the new Skoda Karoq offers a selection of five engines (two diesel and three gasoline) of the latest EVO generation of Volkswagen Groupthat offer a power that goes from 110 hp from TSI access version 1.0 up to 190 hp reserved exclusively for the Sportline version, the sportiest and best equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. For him TDI 2.0which has a power of 150 hp4×4 drive is offered as an option.
Skoda Karoq prices
The Karoq is available in trim levels Active, Ambition and Stylein addition to the variant sport lineand has a starting price of 28,200 euros (22,280 with bells and brand financing offer). The top-of-the-range version is the 190 hp 2.0 TSI with seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, 4×4 drive and Sporline trim level (43,900 euros without discounts), which was the most requested model by colleagues in the specialized press for obvious reasons.
Sportline: the sportiest and most equipped version
We are dedicated to testing the TDI versions, starting with the version 2.0 TDI 150 hp with seven-speed DSG automatic transmission and 4×4 drive with Sportline finish, which is available from 43,000 euros (37,080 with all discounts) and seems to us to be the perfect combination of sportsmanship and efficiency. Although it does not reach the 190 CV of the 2.0 TSI Sportline, it has nothing to envy thanks, mainly, to a generous maximum torque of 360 Nm (the petrol version stays in 320nm), so you have a strongest response and less linear.
As you can imagine, the power delivery is almost immediate and the fun starts from very low revolutions. If we add to that the dynamic chassis control (DCC) and the progressive direction (available as an option), we can make the Karoq behave like a real sports SUV, even if it isn’t. The basic settings (Eco, Comfort, Normal and Sport) can be chosen in the selection of the driving mode, while in the Single mode can be precisely adjusted.
The new Karoq measures 4,390mm long and 1,841mm wide. Front-wheel drive models have a ground clearance of 1,603mm and a wheelbase of 2,638mmwhile the all-wheel drive Karoqs are a little taller (1,608 mm) and have a shorter wheelbase (2,630 mm), although the differences are practically negligible.
When the vehicle is equipped with the seats included as standard, the trunk has a capacity of 521 literswhich increases up to 1,630 liters if the rear seats are folded down. With the VarioFlex seatsoptionally available, the boot has a capacity of 588 literswhich increases to 1,605 liters with the seats folded down, and 1,810 liters if the rear seats are removed (they can be completely removed easily and quickly).
The Skoda Karoq in Spain
Globally, the Skoda Karoq was the brand’s best-selling SUV in 2020 and the second model with more deliveries after the octavia. In Spain it is also one of the most popular Skoda models, although in 2021 it was surpassed by the kamiq (smaller) and in 2022 they have also advanced it, for now, the Fabia and the Octavia. The redesign will serve to boost sales of the model throughout the world, also in Spain, where it competes directly with models such as the Seat Atecathe peugeot 3008the volkswagen tiguanthe kia sportsage and the nissan qashqaiamong others.
