The Subaru Forester is considered one of the most versatile crossovers with the most off-road aspirations of those found in the current SUV market. A model that has historically managed to preserve the efficiency provided by its boxer mechanical drive plant (flat-opposed four-cylinder engine), its efficient all-wheel drive and an elastic and functional frame on the track and asphalt.
Well, the Japanese brand has just made a small revision that, although it does not represent a revolution with respect to this generation launched in 2018, it does provide a qualitative leap at a functional and technological level.
Aesthetically, no big changes are to be expected. Basically all the novelties will be found on the front of the vehicle, especially at the level of the radiator grille, revised in terms of design with touches of black and smaller optics that give it a visual signature with more personality than in the previous model. .
These minimal changes keep the silhouette of the model identical, as well as its dimensions and philosophy in general. As can be seen in the test that we already carried out at the time, we will continue to enjoy an SUV that is 4.62 meters long, five fairly spacious seats and a trunk that also remains the same and a good 509-liter capacity expandable to 1,780 if the second row of seats is folded down.
If we talk about design or aesthetic changes inside, this 2022 version also remains unchanged with the previous model, which is not criticizable either, since it continues to offer its good compromise of finishes and details.
However, when we start talking about equipment we do see the first improvements. To begin with, the management system of your infotainment system adopts a new gesture control system that, through image recognition, allows you to control the air conditioning system with your hand.
For this we can show the fist or the palm of the hand before the central screen to regulate the temperature a few degrees up or down. It is something very curious, but honestly, in the end it is much more intuitive if we use the physical dials of the air conditioning.
This same image recognition system is now capable of recognizing up to four different users sitting behind the wheel. In this way, different parameters can be automatically regulated, such as the personalization of the multimedia system or the regulation of the electric seats in the case of the most equipped versions.
At the safety level, the well-known Eyesight safety system, managed by cameras on the windshield, is significantly improved with the adoption of much broader vision control cameras that optimize its performance, in addition to adding new functions such as lane keeping (before it was only an alert), as well as an evasive maneuver assistance system that detects obstacles on the road and makes the steering faster in order to avoid the obstacle with greater guarantees.
The XMODE system is also dynamically improved. It is the same specific traction control for off-road driving, with functions for mud or slippery floors or more extreme situations, but it no longer disconnects above 40 km/h as before, but rather remains dormant if we exceed that speed, to then be active again if we slow down again on the slopes.
To the efficiency of the Forester is now added a more complete electronic aid box
In the same way, it also automatically activates the e-Active Shift Control program in sport mode (we can activate it manually with a button on the steering wheel) and that allows an improvement in performance delivery at all times, as well as an optimization of motor skills. exit curves, in this case for driving on asphalt.
The manufacturer has also changed some suspension settings, but in general it is still a really comfortable vehicle on asphalt and very effective on tracks, where of course, in addition to its remarkable ground clearance of 22 cm, we must add its efficient traction scheme. Integral 4×4 and the aids that we have already mentioned, in addition to electronic descent control.
For the end we have left the motorization, because essentially we will not find changes either. The Forester 2022 range continues to offer a single 150 hp 2.0 petrol boxer engine with hybrid support from a 17 hp electric drive and a small 0.57 kWh non-pluggable battery that give it a very linear delivery, with good torque. and a very effective response despite being somewhat fair in terms of pure performance.
This combination is still linked to the variator-type Linerartronic gearbox and, although it already improved driving comfort in the previous version by trying to electronically simulate a convertible with conventional gears, even offering steering wheel paddles, in general it is still a gearbox that slips in excess when looking for maximum performance and that it is not the best alternative for a set of engine, transmissions and frame as complete as those of this Forester 2022.
If we talk about price we see that the increase in equipment and technology has meant a slight increase. We are talking about an extra 2,000 euros for the three available versions that are the Sport Plus, the Executive and the more complete Executive Plus, which for these 2022 versions range between 34,600 euros for the first and 38,800 for the Executive Plus.
