Two Oscar-winning director accused of plagiarism – Cinema and Tv – Culture

‘A hero’, Farhadi’s most recent film and which won at the Cannes Film Festival the Grand Jury Prize (ex aequo) in 2021, took elements from the script of the documentary All Winners All Losers, by director Azadeh Masihzadeh, who participated in a film workshop given by the director in 2014.

This was ruled by a team of judges in Iran, who found the Oscar winner for A Separation (2011) and The Salesman (2016) guilty of plagiarism and violating Masihzadeh’s copyright for not crediting her in ‘A Hero’.

The decision could lead to the sentenced person having to hand over all the profits that the film made to the documentary filmmaker (more than two million euros worldwide). A hero tells the story of Rahim, who, upon leaving prison for a special permit, tries to pay off a debt and at the same time finds a bag full of money that he tries to return to its owner.

Asghar Farhad is also famous for having directed Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darínin ‘Everybody knows’, a drama that was shot in Spain.

In addition, according to information published in The Hollywood Reporter, the authorities could escalate the case and put Asghar Farhadi in jailwho has always been a strong opponent of the Iranian government and who claimed that the story of his film was a work that he developed independently and said he was inspired by Bertolt Brech in his story.
